Racing Services Tasmania (RST), a division of the Department of Infrastructure, Energy & Resources, is responsible for ing thoroughbred race horses, harness race horses, racing greyhounds and greyhound industry participants.

RST is also responsible for istering, licensing and regulating the operations of on-course bookmakers. Bookmakers are subject to the Racing Regulation Act 2004, the Racing (Miscellaneous) Regulations 2004, Racing (Race Fields) Regulations 2009 and the Racing (Bookmaker Betting) Regulations 2004.

The Racing Regulation Act of 1952 provides the legislative foundation for the istration of racing, and the current industry operates under a combination of the Racing Regulation Act 2004 and the 2006 Racing Regulation Amendment Bill. The Racing Regulation Act 2004 went into effect on 1 January 2005, when the management of handicapping in horse racing and grading in greyhound racing were assigned to RST. This bill was amended on 1 August 2006 to define the of the 2004 bill and to create deputy positions in each of three Racing Regulatory s established by the original bill.

In December 2008, the Tasmania State Government created a new Integrity Assurance Board. The Integrity Assurance Board was established to adjudicate appeals that arise from certain decisions of the Director of Racing, Tasracing Pty Ltd., and ed racing clubs.

On 1 January 2009, Tasracing took over the governance and istration of the racing industry formerly vested in TOTE Tasmania. TOTE Tasmania was put up for private sale. The sale went through in December 2011, and TOTE was sold to Tatts group for AUD 103 million.
