New South Wales held the first officially sanctioned horse race in Australia in October 1810. The NSW Department of Gaming and Racing regulates the entire racing industry, which includes greyhound, thoroughbred and harness racing. The Office of Racing is the sole regulator of totalizator and fixed-odds betting and the Bookmakers Revision Committee ensures legal compliance and integrity of bookmaking activity in these race types. Race wagering is conducted by TAB Limited and licensed bookmakers.

Greyhound racing is established pursuant to the Greyhound Racing Act 2009. It is controlled, supervised and regulated by Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW), an autonomous, non-government body not subject to discretion by the government. Besides its regulating responsibilities, the GRNSW coordinates greyhound racing schedules; distributes money it receives from commercial agreements; ensures the strategic development and welfare of greyhound racing; and s greyhound racing clubs, trial tracks, greyhounds, owners, trainers, bookmakers and other people associated with greyhound racing.

Harness racing is established through the Harness Racing Act 2009. It is regulated by Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW). Like GRSNW, HRNSW is an autonomous, non-government body not subject to discretion by the government. Also like the GRNSW, the HRNSW is responsible for ing harness racing clubs, harness racing horses, owners, trainers and other people associated with harness racing. It’s also its job to ensure the strategic development and welfare of harness racing in NSW, schedule race dates and distribute money received from commercial agreements.

Thoroughbred racing is overseen by Racing NSW, an autonomous body established under the Thoroughbred Racing Act 1996. In addition to regulating the thoroughbred industry, racing NSW’s duties include distributing TAB funding to thoroughbred racing clubs and licensing participants and bookmakers.
